What is SmartRobby?

What is a robotic lawn mower?
A robotic lawn mower is an autonomous robot used to cut lawn grass. A typical robotic lawn mower requires the user to set up a border wire around the lawn that defines the area to be mowed. The robot uses this wire to locate the boundary of the area to be trimmed and in some cases to locate a recharging dock. The first commercial robotic lawn mower was introduced and patented in 1969 and already showing many features of today's most popular products. In 2012, the growth of robotic lawn mower sales was 15 times that of the traditional mowers.
How does it work?
SmartRobby requires a border wire. The wire is staked down around the perimeter of your property. The SmartRobby lawn mower detects a very safe low-level signal in the wire to find the property boundaries. SmartRobby mows on a schedule that you set (e.g. 3 times/week, once a day, twice a day, etc.) It backs out of the charging dock and drives. When it reaches the perimeter wire or another obstruction, it turns and goes another way. It also performs spiral mowing. The SmartRobby mows up to four hours on a charge (depends on a model). SmartRobby keeps following the random zig-zag/spiral pattern until the battery becomes low or the scheduled time comes to an end. Then it follows the perimeter wire back to the dock for recharging. After charging for ~2 hours, it comes out and continues if it is still in the working schedule.

Why should I buy robotic lawn mower?

How much time SmartRobby will save for me?
Based on our research, SmartRobby will save more than 100 hours every summer! You can read an article “How to save 108h in summer”. Most time is spent on reading instructions and setting border wire, but you can do it by yourself, and don’t need a help from a professional.
Does the quality of my lawn improves?
YES! The quality will certainly improve, because when mowing grass you have to remember the principle that in each mowing time, you should not cut more than ⅓ from the length of your grass. SmartRobby will ensure that your grass is cut in a perfect length all the time, because it can mow every day and in different cutting lengths. One of the highest pluses is that SmartRobby gets rid of all the dandelions and other weeds.
What effect does SmartRobby have on the environment?
Since SmartRobby runs on batteries, there are no emissions generated by the mower, and the actual energy consumption is very low. The running costs are only around 10 to 40 euro per season for the electricity consumed, depending on the size of the lawn. Therefore it is green and energy-effective.
Is SmartRobby noisy?
Not at all. The sound level of SmartRobby is very low, around 60dB. This can be compared with the noise of average conventional mowers, which generate between 95 and 100 dB(A). You can easily have SmartRobby working in the garden without disturbing you or your neighbours.
What happens to the grass clippings?
SmartRobby has a four-blade mulching system (depends on the model). The first blade cuts the grass and the remaining blades chop the grass into very small clippings. If you are already using a mulching lawn mower, you know what happens when you fall behind on mowing. The grass gets longer than your mower can mulch and you end up with big clumps of dead grass that kill the grass underneath. This won’t happen with the SmartRobby robot mower. Grass clippings are repeatedly chopped during the first and subsequent passes. Clippings decay and fertilize the lawn rather than kill it.

How to use SmartRobby?

Will I need a lawn mower as well?
No, our suggestion is to use a trimmer to cut the corners and places SmartRobby does not reach.
Will the mower cut the grass in rainy conditions?
Yes, SmartRobby is supposed to cut grass in all type of weather and is designed to handle wet conditions. It is however recommended to bring the mower inside in extreme weather conditions, such as torrential rain and storms.
How can i mow my lawn evenly if it is set in different size areas?
You can do it by setting mowing schedule for different areas on SmartRobby dashboard.
Will SmartRobby cope with my uneven lawn?
Due to the large driving wheels, SmartRobby can cope with uneven surfaces very well. It also handles slopes up to max 30° incline.
Can SmartRobby cope with narrow passages?
Yes, SmartRobby can handle narrow passages down to 60 cm width, however to work effectively we do recommend passages not less then 2m in width.
Can SmartRobby detect objects such as clothes or toys lying around on the lawn?
No. It is up to the owner to keep the lawn surface free from objects. Any object that is small enough for SmartRobby to pass over may be damaged, as well as cause damage to the machine’s blades. Make sure your lawn is clear of small objects before operating SmartRobby.
What about pine cones, tree branches and fruit on the ground?
To maximise the life of the blades these types of objects should be raked or collected regularly. They will not damage the mower, but the blades will wear faster. Tree branches may also damage or bend the blades resulting in a poor cutting performance.
I have a nice flower bed and trees that I want to protect. Is that possible?
Provided the wire has been installed correctly around your flower bed, tree, shrub, or other object, then SmartRobby cannot damage it or intrude into that area.
How does SmartRobby handle very long grass?
If the grass is very long and thick you should raise the cutting height and then gradually reduce it to the preferred level. In very extreme conditions the lawn may need to be cut by a conventional mower before SmartRobby takes over.

What’s the lifetime of the battery?
This depends on the area and set running time of the mower. If you run SmartRobby 6 months a year on an area of 800 m², your battery will last ~3-4 seasons. In order to save your battery you should set the mowing schedule according to the size of your lawn. During the dry season you can easily reduce the running time without losing performance. NB! Battery need to be fully charged at least 1x month when not used. You can use direct charge plug for it.
What’s the lifetime of the blades?
The life of the blades depends on the type of soil and grass. Typically, the life is 1-2 months on 1000 m². You can replace the lightweight blades in five minutes using a regular screwdriver.
